A New Map of the North Parts of America claimed by France under ye names of Louisiana, Mississippi, Canada & New France

The United States and Canada from Newfoundland in the north to Florida in the south and stretching as far west as New Mexico.



This map, including the title , is based on Moll's highly politicised, large two sheet map of the United States present in his work, "The World Described" and first engraved in 1720. Some changes have been made, most notably the omission of the Margravate of Azalia, Sir Robert Montgomerie's short-lived attempt to create a Utopia in the region of modern Georgia.



The political element on this map is still present, with the title distinctly warning of French claims to the continent under the names Louisiana, Mississippi, Canada and New France. The explanations to these claims are present through a series of text panels on the large map of 1720 but are not present on this map, probably due to a lack of room on the plate. Yet, the sprawl of the names "New France, Louisiana and Canada" can clearly be discerned in the interior of the continent. This is countered by the width of the names of the English colonies "Virginia, North and South Carolina" and the newly added "Georgia".



Finally, an interesting mistake was made on the upper left, where the engraver has stated that the upper border reads "degrees East of London"; judging by the numbers, that should clearly be degrees west of London. [USA9205]
