One of a series of iconic posters by Lucian Boucher advertising the services of Air France world wide.
This is one of the earliest versions of what were to become Boucher's most famous series of posters. A veteran of World War I, Boucher became a successful commercial artist in Paris. He worked on numerous commissions throughout his career but he will always be most closely associated with his posters advertising Air France. Between the 1930s and the 1960s he produced a series of posters advertising the growing network of air routes offered by the airline.
Stylistically, the maps bear a resemblance to earlier Golden Age maps of the world but with simplified geography and bright printed colour. This example shows the network in its infancy, with the focus of the air line being on the Far East, mainly to French Indochina and Africa. The only trans-Atlantic link shown is Paris to Santiago in Chile via northwest Africa.
