Map of the Superficial Geology of the British Isles with the Physical and Topographical Features
Folding wall map of Great Britain and Ireland, divided into their counties, emphasizing the nation's newly-constructed railway network. Given that this map was published less than twenty years after the first modern railways was constructed in Britain, the extent of the railway network is extraordinary. Planned railways are marked with dashed lines. Major roads and canals are also marked, though with far less prominence. The map is dense with detail yet still very clear thanks to Wyld's excellent engraving and printing.
Despite the map's title, surface geology is not indicated on the map. Other examples of this map do exist which were hand-coloured to show the suface geology, though it appears that James Wyld, a cunning businessman, used the same base map for both his geological and political maps without re-engraving the title to suit the map.
Original hand-colour. [Folded] [GB2015]
