Highly detailed chart of the Delta of the River Euphrates from Chesney's landmark survey of the river.
Although he became a general in the Royal Artillery, Chesney is far better known for two things: being the first to suggest the construction of the Suez Canal and performing the greatest survey of the River Euphrates up to that time, assessing its feasibility as a commercial river route. The survey was performed in 1835-7 and the report was published in 1850. It was accompanied by a series of fourteen maps, including twelve which portrayed a survey of the River Euphrates in extraordinary detail.
This map was sheet twelve of the survey, recording the Euphrates Delta showing the area around the city of Basrah in modern Iraq. [MEAST4375]
