Highly detailed map of Turkey in Asia covering Turkey, Iraq, the Holy Land, Cyprus, Armenia and Georgia.
Cary's map published in 1801 was issued at a critical time in the political development in the region as Napoleon had just invaded Egypt and his army was marching north in the Levant. This ensured that the Ottoman Empire was dragged into contemporary European military politics as well as ultimately leading to an unprecedented rise in Egyptian power in the region under Muhammad Ali Pasha.
The map is also beatifully engraved to show topography and is meticulous in tracing the important trade routes in the region which were centuries old and part of the Silk Road.
Original hand colour. [MEAST4428]
