Ceylon olim Taprobana
Stunning copper-engraved map of Ceylon with north to the right of the page and a large, splendid title cartouche celebrating the wealth of the island's produce. Dutch East India Company factories are marked with small Dutch flags.
This map was engraved by Matthaus Seutter, the leading German mapmaker of the period, but is heavily copied from earlier Dutch maps. Most of the text on the map is still in its original Dutch, thouh Seutter has helpfully added a paragraph of German text in the upper-left corner describing the island and its produce.
Original hand-colour. [IC2685]
