Het Niew Hollandt
The third printed map to focus specifically on Australia. This map is derived from one of Coronelli's enormous globe gores and includes descriptive text in Italian below and on the verso. The geography is based on the discoveries of Abel Tasman in 1644. Only the northern coastline of Australia is shown, along with parts of Indonesia and New Guinea. Small, delicate illustrations claim to show the native inhabitants of Australia, though the inclusion of an elephant and two deer remind us that almost nothing was known about the flora and fauna of Australia at this time.
