Pictorial map of New York City with an illustrated border. Extraordinary detail is present on this map.
This is one of the great pictorial maps of New York. Stylistically, it is based on Farrow's "Woundrous Map of Manhattan" and covers the island from the Battery to the Upper East Side. The map promotes the city to the traveller, tourist and local alike, giving an impression of modernity and bustle, as the metropolis that never sleeps. Multiple locations of interest are marked for nightlife, the arts, leisure and sports. This is further emphasized by a border illustrating the inhabitants of the city engaging in every day activities. There is a charming vignette on the lower right corner of the artist himself, Nils Hansell, recording all of this for posterity.
This map has correctly been identified as one of the best examples of the pictorial cartography of post-war New York and has been increasingly used as an illustration for the beginning of the Golden Age of the city within multiple media outlets. Printed colour. [USA9100]
