Extraordinary and rare 7 inch lunar relief globe, produced by Educational Frontiers to celebrate the Moon landing in July 1969. This was the very first accurate relief globe of the moon ever produced and it is said that the head of the Hayden Planetarium in New York had declared it “one of the finest celestial models he had ever seen.”
The first editions were produced prior to the Moon landings, with the idea that people could use them to follow the Apollo 11’s landmark voyage at home. There was then a limited edition of the lunar globes produced after the Moon landings with commemorative plaque. Later still, a larger 13” edition with a ruled meridian- which replaced these smaller 7” models making them even more rare. Each globe would have originally come with a booklet and a map of the moon. (Please note that this example does not come with booklet and map – a complete set is very hard to come by).
So realistic and accurate was this globe, that American broadcasting company CBS bought exclusive usage and filming rights for the globe, using an example for TV simulations during the landmark coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing with Walter Cronkite on July 20th, 1969.
This magnificent survival was made in 1969 to celebrate the success of the Apollo 11 mission. On the simple acrylic cradle on which the globe rests, a replica of the plaque left on the moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin – Nystrom | Man in Space | Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon | July 1969, AD
