Sri Lanka, or Ceylon, by one of the leading figures of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography. Decorated with sailing ships and two elaborate cartouches. Published in the later editions of Jansson's Atlas Major.
The shape of the island is remarkably accurate for the period, a reflection of the intense interest by the Dutch in Sri Lanka. Several notes on the map refer to places where cinnamon, the primary commodity of the island, could be found. Other notes refer to "tanques", ancient irrigation tanks dating back as far as 300BC around which elephants often gathered.
Blank verso. Original hand-colour. [IC2641]
