Island nach Murdochischer Projection
Detailed map of Iceland with towns, roads, markets, and hot springs marked. Small inset map of the Faroe Islands in the lower-left corner.
This map's geography is largely based on the findings of a French expedition under Verdun de la Crenne which was sent to re-survey the North Atlantic in the 1770s. From calculations of longitude conducted in Iceland's western fjords, Verdun's team moved the island's west coast almost 3.5 degrees to the east. They were unable to perform similarly detailed calculations in eastern Iceland, and as a result simply succeeded in compressing the island and making their map less accurate than its predecessors.
