This map shows the Balkans and Turkey at its westernmost extremity, at this point still the Ottoman Empire and stretches through the Levant, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, Afghanistan, Pakistan, past the Indian sub-continent and into modern Myanmar.

The main purpose of this map was the show the position of the newly completed Suez Canal and how it would influence and change travel to India and the Far East. It marks the developing political situations in these countries such as the new provinces in India and the Turkish dominion of the Kingdom of Hejaz. It also shows the proximity of that other great power in the north of this region, Russia, who was about to embark on yet another attack on the Ottoman Empire four years after this map was published. Finally, the map also marks the highly developed and ancient system of trade routes throughout the region and the developing network of railways in the sub-continent. Original hand colour. Folded.
