The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was a period when the Survey Dept. was given a far wider purview in the mapping of the island which resulted in a series of fine topographical and more specialised maps. This example is of the former variety showing the latest stage of the road network, a colour scale noting differing heights as well as telegraph lines and the railway network, both functioning and under construction.
