Carte d'Afrique
Imposing map of Africa originally revised and published by de L'Isle in the 1720s but here published in the Dutch edition.
De L'Isle's revision of his landmark map of Africa first published in 1700 is substantial. The decorative cartouche featuring elephants has been replaced by a far more functional shield on the upper left; geographically, there is now a mysterious body of water in Central Africa which bears a strong resemblance to Lake Malawi, there is far greater detail in Southern Africa and the kingdom of the Congo, together with the Portuguese colony of Angola is acknowledged. These are the major features among several others.
Original hand colour. [AFR5857]
