A New and Correct Chart exhibiting the Atlantic and Western Ocean and the greatest part of the Ethiopic or Southern Ocean
Extraordinary chart of the North and South Atlantic on four sheets joined, showing shipping lanes and the tracks of specific ships from English ports to the Cape of Good Hope. The chart was included in Laurie and Whittle's Oriental Pilot and it shows multiple tracks of British East India Co. ships to the Far East. These ships would ultimately reach the Indian Ocean ports of Mumbay and Calcutta and finally sail on to Far Eastern Ports such as Hong Kong before returning to British ports. As well as showing the Western coasts of Europe and Africa together with the Eastern coasts of the North America and South America, it also emphasises the importance of staging posts along the routes, such as the Cape Verde Islands, the Azores, St. Helena and Tristan de Cuhna. Specific ships mentioned on the map are The Alfred, Eurydice, The Tartar and the St. Ann among others. Some pencil annotations mark other routes. [AMER2301] [Tube]
