A Map of Eastern Turkey in Asia
Detailed map of the Caucasus to accompany the paper by Sir Frederick Richard Maunsell. The map covers the modern day regions of Iraq, Syria, Armenia and Turkey, and the autonomous region of Kurdistan. This map shows the surveyed topography and infrastructure (railways, roads, etc).
Sir Frederick Richard Maunsell had a long and distinguished military career which included a position as the British Military Attaché in Istanbul, and action in the Punjab Campaigns (1848-49), the Indian Rebellion (1857), and the Afghan War (1879).
He was a member of the Royal Engineers and an expert on the Middle East - having written a substantive amount of articles about the region throughout his career. The map is based on the survey work done by the British Army, Maunsell.
This map would have been published in one of the periodical reports released by The Royal Geographical Society, published in London, 1906, and it is likely that Maunsell himself would have presented and read his findings to an audience at the R. G. S. in London as it was released. The report lists the military men and units responsible for surveying each of the regions featured in the map, and the methods of surveying was achieved.
