The Coast of Spain from Cape St. Martin to Cape St. Sebastian with the Islands of Majorca, Minorca & Yvica

Stunning sea chart of the islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza by the English chartmakers William Mount and Thomas Page. The firm of Mount & Page dominated the market for sea charts in Britain for most of the 18th century by acquiring the stock of earlier mapmakers, such as John Seller, Samuel Thornton, and Charles Price. The firm was an enormous commercial success, though their maps were generally derivative and were rarely updated in the latter half of the century.



This chart of the Balearic islands was based on the surveys of Michelot & Bremond, Royal Hydrographers to King Louis XIV of France. Large compass roses and rhumb lines imitate the portolan style, while an inset focuses on the port of Mahon, Menorca. Like Gibraltar, Menorca had been ceded to Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, making it an important Mediterranean harbour for English ships.
