Carte du Perou
This fascinating map charts the geographical progress made by Godin, Bouguer and Condamine in their expedition to Quito, attempting to prove a theory by Newton that the Earth was flattened at the Poles and "bulged" at the Equator. Amongst many other achievements, Condamine was the first Western European to survey the course of the Amazon scientifically. [SAM3083]
