Detailed survey map showing the achievements of the National Antarctic Expedition (1901-04), better known as the Discovery Expedition. Scott's further south is marked at the top of the page.
This map was compiled and drawn by George Mulock, a Royal Navy officer who served as the cartographer on the expedition. Mulock joined the expedition aboard the relief ship Morning and replaced Ernest Schackleton who was suffering from scurvy. His surveying work surpassed all expectations and he produced some of the most detailed surveys of the continent that had ever been achieved at the time. Mulock continued to serve in the Royal Navy for decades after his return from Antarctic in 1904. He saw action at Gallipoli during WW1 and was the most senior Navy officer captured by the Japanese during the Fall of Singapore in 1942.
Printed colour. Framed. [Pedersen & Curtis "The Mapping of Antarctica": 29] [POLAR292]
