Transvaal and surrounding territories illustrating a paper by F. Jeppe, a noted German mapmaker who settled in the Transvaal from 1861.
This map is notable as it was published in the same year as the British tried to annex the Transvaal or the South African Republic as it was known to the Boers. This precipitous action was caused by two major factors: one was the discovery of diamonds in the Transvaal and the other was the abolition of slavery within the British Empire. The use of slaves within the mines led to escalating tensions and ultimately multiple regional conflicts including the Zulu War and the Boer Wars.
Printed colour. [AFR5956] (BC)
