Jenkinson was the first Englishman to explore Muscovy and the Caspian Sea region. Over the course of four separate trading expeditions between 1558 and 1571, he compiled a detailed account of the politics, geography, and culture of parts of Russia and Central Asia. He met several times with Ivan the Terrible to negotiate trade terms with the British on behalf of Queen Elizabeth and the Muscovy Company. His writings formed the basis for most European maps of Russia until the end of the 17th century, including those of Ortelius, Hondius, Speed, and Blaeu.
