A beautifully ornate map of Wales from John Speed's seminal atlas, the "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine". The left and right borders contain views of twelve of the most important Welsh towns of the era, including Cardiff, Pembroke, Carmarthen, and Cardigan. There are also four smaller views of important churches, such as St David's, Bangor, and Llandaff. The map is further embellished with sea monsters, a sailing ship, and a compass rose featuring the coat of arms of the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great.
Unlike most Speed maps, the verso of this example is blank. Coloured. [WCTS1431]
