Discoveries of the Second Grinnell Expedition (1853-5) in search of Sir John Franklin. The expedition explored the Smith Sound and Kennedy Channel which separate Greenland from Ellesmere Island. In doing so they achieved a new furthest north record.



The expedition is an incredible example of bravery and resolve in the face of unimaginable hardships. Though three members of the crew died to illness, the rest of the crew managed to survive two winters locked in the ice, as well as a heroic 1,300 mile trek back to safety after abandoning their ship, the Advance. The account of the voyage by its leader, Elisha Kent Kane, was hugely popular and helped to promote Arctic exploration in America.
