Ingrams (1897-1973) served as a Political Officer in Aden between 1934-37 and became British Resident Advisor in Al Mukalla between 1937-40 and 1942-44. During his career in the Aden Protectorate, he and his wife, Doreen (1906-1997), travelled extensively in the Hadhramut, becoming the first Europeans to explore the Sei'ar country, as well as helping to establish medical and relief centres during the famine of 1943-44. They were jointly awarded the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal by the Royal Central Asian Society in 1939 and the Founder's Medal by the royal Geographical Society in 1940. William Ingrams was also awarded an OBE in 1933.

Doreen Ingrams was herself a colonial figure and writer. Her pioneering work with her husband in surveying South Arabia led to a memoir, "A Time in Arabia" (1970).
