Map Shewing the Overland tracks from Perth to Eucla & Adelaide
Sketch map of the overland route from Perth to Adelaide with useful landmarks and water sources marked. Surveyed by Sir John Forrest, Surveyor General of Western Australia and the colony's first Premier.
After leading three successful expeditions into the interior of West Australia, Forrest was commissioned with surveying a route to connect the eastern and western colonies along the southern coast. This route had been traveled 30 years earlier by Edward John Eyre, but the journey had almost killed him and a safer route was needed. Forrest's expedition was well organized, allowing them to travel in 5 months what had taken Eyre 12 months to cross in the 1840's and without losing a single horse.
