Route of Capt. S.S. Butler (1st Staff Reg) and Capt. L. Aylmer (K.A.R) from Baghdad to Damascus via El Jauf
Sketch map of the overland route from Baghdad to Damascus travelled by S.S. Butler and L. Aylmer in 1908. The region between Baghdad and El Jauf had not previously been mapped by Europeans, nor had any European travelled westwards across this region from Baghdad to Damascus. The routes of the explorers Francis Rawdon Chesney (1837) and Charles Huber (1883-4) are marked with light grey lines. A section of the famous railway from Istanbul to Mecca & Medina can be seen on the western edge of the map.
Published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. Printed colour. [MEAST3592]
