Switzerland Divided into Cantonments
Finely engraved miniature map of Switzerland divided into its cantons from Andrew Dury's A new general and universal atlas containing forty five maps (1761). This example is from the second edition of Dury's atlas, published in 1763 with French titles added above most of the maps.
Dury was a French Huguenot refugee who fled France during the Wars of Religion, settling in London and Dublin. He frequently partnered with fellow Huguenot mapmaker John Rocque, and even continued Rocque's business after his death alongside Rocque's widow, Mary Anne. He also engraved and produced maps for Thomas Jefferys, Robert Sayer, Carington Bowles, and many other prominent 18th century cartographers.
