[Tabula Secunda Asiae]
Early Ptolemaic woodcut map of Sarmatia, a historical region of Asiatic Russia between the River Don and the Volga controlled by the nomadic Sarmatians. The map's geography is based on data compiled in the second century AD by the Greco-Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemy, which explains the distorted shape and lack of detail. This map was printed in the 1541 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with maps by Laurent Fries/Martin Waldseemuller, text by Servetus, and published by Gaspar Treschel.
Strong impression. [RUS1619]
