Les XVII. Provinces Dites les Pays-Bas
The Seventeen Provinces of the Low Countries, which included the Netherlands, Flanders, and sections of northern France.
This map is meant to illustrate the region of during the accession of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles VI. At this time the Dutch provinces had seceded and Louis XIV had claimed several districts for northern France in the early 18th century. Charles VI died in 1740, thus sparking the War of the Austrian Succession when he claimed that his daughter, Maria Theresa, should become Empress.
Georges-Louis le Rouge was a French military engineer who had an active role in this war.
