L. Ronwolfs Reys-Togten, door de Levant, of Oosterse Landschappen der Middellandse Zee
Map of the Eastern Mediterranean from Pieter van der Aa's Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-wardigste Zee en Landreizen, a compilation of land and sea voyages by 16th and 17th century travellers. This map shows the 1573-76 journey of German physician Leonhard Rauwolf from Marseille to Aleppo in search of new herbal medicines. Rauwolf was one of the first Europeans to describe the practice of drinking coffee. The map's decorative title cartouche illustrates Rouwolf's introduction to three Syrian merchants or noblemen.
Coloured. [MED2007]
