Southern Iraq and Iranian border showing the travels of William Kennett Loftus, the archaeologist credited with discovering the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk, as well as th Apadana at Persepolis. Loftus was a trained geologist who in 1849 was assigned to the Turco-Persian Boundary Commission. During his travels in the region Loftus visited numerous ancient sites including Uruk, Larsa, and Susa and developed a passion for archaeology. He was subsequently assigned to the excavations at Uruk (where he discovered the Great Ziggurat of Ur), Nimrud (where he discovered the "Burnt Palace" of Assurnasirpal II), and Susa (where he discovered the Persepolis Apadana).
