Embellished with rhumb lines, ships and compass roses, this map assimilates accurate technique and clear detail with delightful artistic affect. Central Africa has not been mapped, neither has its northern coastal line by the Mediterranean. Settlements and ports have been noted to the right, around Arabia and India, and to the left along the Brazilian coast of South America. The coats of arms in the top left corner are those of Portugal.
The sailing routes of the two Portuguese ships on either side of the tip of South Africa are marked on the map, one is dated starting from Lisbon in April 1736, proceeding to cross the Atlantic and then arching back down to the Cape, and stopping on the South East Coast of Africa. The route then starts again in August 1737, following up through the Indian Ocean to reach Goa in September 1737.
