Lake Turkana (formerly Lake Rudolf), Kenya and its surroundings with the route of H.S.H. Cavendish's 1897 expedition marked in black.

Cavendish, the archetypal Victorian gentleman-explorer, invested almost £100,000 of his family fortune in the expedition which consisted of 84 porters, a headman, and dozens of wagons of supplies. As shown in the smaller inset in the lower-right corner, the expedition began on the coast of the Gulf of Aden at Berbera before moving inland through Somalia and Ethiopia.

By the time Cavendish reached Lake Turkana he was desperately short on water and supplies, having been unable to resupply from local villages as expected. His solution was to split the company: Cavendish followed the lake's Western shore with a smaller party whilst his servant and second-in-command Harry Andrew took the larger party along the lake's eastern shore. The two parties reunited south of Lake Turkana near Lake Baringo.

Curiously, Harry Andrews' arguably more difficult route does not appear on this map, nor did he receive any mention in Cavendish's lecture to the Royal Geographical Society for which this map was printed. However, a close examination of the shores of Lake Sugota suggest that Andrews' work was not completely thankless as Cavendish named a volcano after him.
