Description:

Dutch Golden Age map of western Switzerland, particularly the cantons of Vaud, Fribourg, Neuchatel, and part of Bern. Lake Geneva, Lake Neuchatel, and the Thunersee are all marked. English text on the back of the map describes the region's geography and history, including explaining the map's unusual title: "Das Wiflispurgergov". Apparently, this refers to the Swiss city of Wipflisburgh, known to the Romans as Aventicum. This was the capital of the Roman province of Helvetia which included most of western Switzerland and generally corresponds to the area shown on this map. Charming descriptions of Bern, Lausanne, and Fribourg are also included in the verso text (image of verso available on request).
