Description:
|
|
Splendid map of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great showing the country extending from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean. The map's stunning title cartouche depicts Tsar Peter surrounded by symbols of wisdom and learning representing the major advances made during Peter's reign in ship-building, architecture, town planning, and military science. The map's geography becomes increasingly crude as you move away from western Russia. The Caspian Sea is still shown as a vague blob, Novaya Zemlya and Svalbard are only partly mapped, and the Pacific coastline is largely guesswork. Original hand-colour. [RUS1862] |
