Description:
Splendid map of Malta with a vivid depiction of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. A massive fleet of almost 200 Turkish ships attempted to capture the island from the Knights of Malta, hoping to strengthen their control over the Mediterranean.

Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Knights were able to resist the siege thereby striking a powerful blow to Ottoman prestige. The island's towns, fortifications, and hills are wonderfully illustrated, as are the armies and navies of the combatants.

This image is derived from a 1582 map by Matteo Perez d’Aleccio, re-engraved and re-published by Antonio Lucini, one of Italy's finest engravers. Lucini is better known for engraving the maps from Sir Robert Dudley's landmark atlas "Dell'Arcano del Mare".

Strong impression. [MED548]
