This beautiful, rare map of Switzerland is one of the coveted “carte-a-figure” maps published almost exclusively in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age.

The Hondius family led one of the two major cartographic firms of the Dutch Golden Age in partnership with the Mercator and Jansson families. Their speciality was in maps which perfectly married knowledge and art. Geographically, the map is the extremely accurate for the time. Artistically, the addition of the marginal vignettes illustrating traditionally dressed Swiss merchants, nobles, and peasants, as well as miniature panoramas of Bern, Zurich, Basel, Lucerne, etc., sets this map apart from all other Dutch Golden Age maps in terms of quality and beauty.

The sheer time and expense of engraving and printing these pieces hugely limited their number at time of publishing, making them both rare and desirable on the market today.
