Cartographer: John Harrison
Title: A New Map of North America
Date: 1785
Published: London
Width: 10 inches / 26 cm
Height: 7 inches / 18 cm
Map ref: AMER2353
Description:
A new map of North America published 2 years after the Revolutionary War, showing the newly-independent United States of America extending west to the Mississippi River. Spain has regained control over Florida and the Bahamas, while Canada remains under British control. Much of the interior of the continent remains entirely unexplored, though the Pacific Coast is at least roughly sketched based on the surveys of James Cook. A large section of California is still labeled as New Albion, a reference to Sir Francis Drake's landing in 1579 during which he claimed that land for England.
