Emanuel Bowen: A New & Accurate Map of Brasil. Divided into its Captainships

Map: SAM3379

Cartographer: Emanuel Bowen
Title: A New & Accurate Map of Brasil. Divided into its Captainships
Date: 1747
Published: London
Width: 17 inches / 44 cm
Height: 14 inches / 36 cm
Map ref: SAM3379
Description:
The coastline and interior of Brazil as they were known to the English in the mid-18th century. Large inset of Santa Catarina island, now the site of the city of Florianópolis. A paragraph in the lower-right corner explains Bowen's decision to removel the imaginary island of Ascension from this map (not to be confused with the real Ascension located near St. Helena in the South Atlantic) as Edmund Halley, the astronomer and navigator, has determined that it did not exist. Amusingly, the equally nonexistent island of Trinidad can still be found on this map, located just above that very paragraph.

Strong impression. [SAM3379]
