Description:
This chart accompanies one of the earliest and most important studies of coral on the Great Barrier Reef.

Saville-Kent was a pioneering marine biologist. He was made Inspector of Fisheries in Tasmania in 1884, then Commissioner of Fisheries for Queensland in 1889 and the same position for Western Australia in 1892. Among his pioneering research was a study of coral in the Great Barrier Reef, possibly the first time a study of this type had been undertaken as well as research into sustainable fishing and into culturing pearls.
