Description:
Copper-engraved city plan of Exeter featuring a vignette of Exeter Cathedral, as well as a numbered index to the city's houses of worship. The inclusion of Quaker, Anabaptist, and Dissenter Meeting Houses along with a Jewish synagogue is quite fascinating and speaks to the growing religious diversity of cities like Exeter during the Georgian period.

Engraved by John Roper for inclusion in The Beauties of England and Wales (1801-15), a multi-volume work describing the history and geography of Britain. The entry for Devonshire in which this map appeared was authored by the antiquary John Britton, and published by Vernor & Hood in London.

Coloured. [DEVON558]
