Belzonis rare depiction of the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico.

This piece was included in Book IV of de Bry’s seminal work, the Grand Voyages, which is often cited as the most important work published about the New World. It is certainly the first important narrative dealing with the conduct of the Spanish and thus highly controversial even for the time.

This map was contributed to the publisher by an Italian explorer, sailor and possibly merchant, Girolami Benzoni. It is one of the earliest maps of the whole region, covering Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Islands, as well as Venezuela and Central America. Honduras is labelled by its old name of Fondura, which is possibly a Leonese word meaning “Anchorage”.

This is a cornerstone map for any collection of maps of the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies.

Strong impression copper-engraving. [WIND3921]
