This map was published to show the political changes after the Seven Years' War, also known as the French and Indian War. In the Treaty of Paris (1763), Britain annexed Spanish Florida and French Canada, giving them control of all of the land east of the Mississippi River. This map was published just six years before the American Declaration of Independence.



European colonial possessions are designated by colour: British is yellow; French is blue; Spanish is red; Portuguese is green; Dutch is orange. The possessions are also listed in a helpful table in the lower-left corner.
