This map was printed to focus on the reasons and theatre of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. Although not a specific battle plan, the map focuses on regional maritime routes together with interior infrastructure, particularly railways, both completed and projected. The large inset of Korea highlights the strategic focus of the War which was fought mainly in Manchuria and Korea, particularly around the Russian naval base in Port Arthur, which the Russians gained after the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5 and which was felt as a great loss of face for the Japanese at the time. The pivotal battle of the War was a naval engagement in the Tsushima Straits, [Battle of the Tsushima Straits] located just off the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula.
