The map was originally published by Tanner in 1836 and was based on the much older map issued by Carey and Lea in 1822. This example is the slightly later edition of c.1850, now a lithographic plate and with different border decoration than the earlier maps.
The map shows the planned route of the Hiwassee Railroad between Knoxville and Dalton, Georgia. Although the planning for this railway was initiated in 1838, the first trains did not arrive in Knoxville until 1855. By that time, the railway had been re-chartered as the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad.
The map also bears insets of the environs of two major settlements in the State, Knoxville and Nashville.
