The Americas on Mercator's Projection published just before the advent of the Mexican American War.
Due to its date, this map bears several geo-historical curiosities. These include the naming of Alaska as "Russian America" as the area was still under Russian control at this time; furthermore, due to the Russo-American Treaty of 1824, the United States claims a large area of modern Alberta and British Columbia. A notable omission is the absence of the Republic of Texas (1836-45), which claimed claimed independence from Mexico but is not shown as such on this map.
