Samuel Purchas
13 x 17 cm
Small, early map of Japan issued in the "Mercator Minor" or reduced Mercator Hondius atlas.
This map is a reduced version of Hondius's larger map. This map in turn was derived from the map by Ortelius issued in 1595, the first European map of Japan.
The original surveys were based on information obtained by Portuguese Jesuits who passed it onto Ludovico Texeira at the court of the King of Portugal. Texeira in turn passed it onto Ortelius who issued in his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" acknowledged as the first atlas of the world.
