The map focuses on Boston and its northeast suburbs including Wakefield, Marblehead, Lynn and Melrose . It was published by the Appalachian Mountain Club shortly after the Massachusetts Legislature enlarged the Club’s charter “to enable it to hold mountain and forest lands and historic sites and so preserve the beauty and attractiveness of our mountains and especially of their forests.” Hence the map is particularly focused on the natural features of the region, including wooded areas, contours and public reservations.
Edwin Bacon, the compiler and editor of the work containing these maps was most likely Edwin Munroe Bacon, a well known journalist with an interest in local history and geography who wrote several works on Boston.
