John Rocque
32 x 48 cm
Rocque originally issued a larger plan of just the Kensington Palace Gardens in 1736. This reduced plan incorporated the Garden Plan but also added new detail about the village of Kensington around the Gardens, including early visions of Kensington High Street, Kensington Gore, Hammersmith Road and Oxford Street, here named Oxford Road.
A small hamlet on “Oxford Road”, just above the “New River” is called “Bays Watering” an early reference to Bayswater. A building opposite the hamlet, numbered 16, is identified as “Bayswater House” on the key on the lower margin of the map.
A fascinating and rarely seen 18th century focus on Kensington and Bayswater.
