Emmanuel de Bourgade
88 x 59 cm
Important map of Paraguay published just after the delineation of its new borders after the Paraguyan War.
Dr. Emmanuel de Bourgade was a French doctor and traveller who developed a fascination with Paraguay after his arrival in the country in 1887. He travelled extensively throughout the land and produced arguably the best and most complete map of the country that was commercially available. His sources are mainly based on his own travels but he also consulted unpublished documents produced by the Boundary Commission in 1871-3 as well as other maps by Captain Ernest Mouchez of the French Navy and Dr. Hugo Toeppen from his work "A Hundred Days in Paraguay."The result is probably the finest and most accurate map of the country after its new geographical limits imposed by the loss of the war againts the triple alliance of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay of 1864-70.
